Messi’s coronation in PSG colors and Ronaldo’s comeback to United and some other tit-bits of the transfer market news

August 31, 2021

The City of Reims or as the French refer to it as “la cite des sacres” which translates ‘the city of Coronation’ stood witness to yet another coronation after decades as Lionel Messi began a new era of French Football. The royal anointing of the new king of French football had begun a long time back for the people of Reims when they finally came to know that Lionel Messi is traveling with la equipe (‘the team’ in French) to Reims for PSG’s away fixture the ticket sales sky-rocketed. On Sunday night the Stade Auguste-Delaune had been packed up with more than 20,000 fans (mostly home supporters) and they all chanted and waved as Lionel Messi’s ever-smiling stature came to sight.

It was all beautiful and heartfelt with the people of Reims up-close as they seared into the glory of Messi magic probably for the first time but cut to some hours back in a sultry evening at the Camp Nou Ronald Koeman’s Barca missed their former main-man and that aura of his absence spread into the stadium like wildfire. Barcelona lacked brilliance as they faced a resurgent Getafe side but Sergi Roberto’s early goal and Memphis Depay’s differential strike took them to the fourth position in the league table with a final scoreline of 2-1. Gerard Pique had been a bold figure since Messi left after taking a huge pay cut and scoring a goal in their inaugural fixture against Real Sociedad as he took to his captain’s role seriously and shouted at his teammates “Fuerte, fuerte, fuerte!!!” (which roughly translates to ‘Go Strong’) from the stands. It was an encouraging atmosphere through and through. Although, Emerson Royal (who is now a Tottenham Hotspur player as the North London club offered him a contract worth 25million Euros and Barcelona exercised a buy-back clause) who replaced Sergino Dest in the right-back had not been impressive for the Blaugrana’s against Getafe as his defensive mistake cost them the equalizer. Let’s see how Spurs uses his services after Serge Aurier fell out of grace with the board members and Japhet Tanganga replaced him and he has already started at the right-back position for them and he proved to be efficient and charismatic for the Coys.

Now back to the Coronation night, as Lionel Messi stepped into the pitch among a huge cauldron of noise while the Reims supporters recited his name at the 66th minute with Paris Saint- Germaine up by two goals to nil (Thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s brace) as he substituted his old friend and colleague Neymar Jr. Neymar embraced Messi as he dispersed away from the field of play which felt like ‘brothers in arms’ moment and for the next 24 minutes while Messi was on the pitch he was the most fouled player of the game. It’s natural no, the opposition looking into and feeling the presence of one of the greats of the game and not being able to contemplate enough how they are going to stop his attacks as he combined with Mbappe once around 77th minute. That sight was enough for all the PSG fans to envision what was yet to come from this brilliant and star-studded team this season.

The Premier League as it has always been true to the testament is one of the biggest and the most exciting league this season and Matchweek 2 was a pulsating one as well. With Manchester City crushing Arsenal with a 5-0 victory which felt like an afternoon stroll for Guardiola and Co, Manchester United clinched away yet another victory ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s inclusion into the squad. Ronaldo posted and confirmed his comeback on Instagram today with a long message for the fans and at the end he added-“PS- Sir Alex, this one is for you…”  This message was all that the Red Devils needed on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid’s calm way of pursuing Kylian Mbappe this season proved to be a bit ineffective as according to some reports this deal will be too complicated to seal this season. On the other hand, Real Madrid confirmed the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Eduardo Camavinga from Ligue 1 club Rennes for 31 million Euros. It’s hard to say what the last ticking minutes of the transfer market clock would show but stay tuned for all the other updates!!!
